EXPANDED PERLITE
This is a vitreous volcanic rock that contains molecules of water of crystallisation. This mineral, crushed to a default grade, is heated at 1,200°C in special furnaces. At this temperature, the occluded water turns into steam and acts as an expanding agent until a light grain is formed, consisting of closed, empty microcells, thereby multiplying its volume up to 20 times. This is a physical process only.
The distinguishing feature which sets perlite apart from other volcanic glasses is that when heated to a suitable point in its softening range, it expands from four to twenty times its original volume.
This expansion is due to the presence of two to six percent combined water in the crude perlite rock. When quickly heated to above 1600°F (871°C), the crude rock pops in a manner similar to popcorn as the combined water vaporizes and creates countless tiny bubbles which account for the amazing light weight and other exceptional physical properties of expanded perlite.
This expansion process also creates one of perlite’s most distinguishing characteristics: its white color. While the crude rock may range from transparent light gray to glossy black, the color of expanded perlite ranges from snowy white to grayish white.
Expanded perlite can be manufactured to weigh as little as 2 pounds per cubic foot (32kg/m3) making it adaptable for numerous applications. Since perlite is a form of natural glass, it is classified as chemically inert and has a pH of approximately 7.
We produce different grades of expanded perlite : 0-0,14 mm; 0.16-1.25 mm; 0.16-5.0 mm; 0.63-5.0 mm, which ensures its use for different materials.
Perlite, once its volume has increased, keeps all of its initial mineral properties such as: Non- tóxic. It does not contain or emit any toxic or harmful substances.
Imputrescible – It does not contain any organic substances, it is a mineral.
Incombustible – It does not burn, it avoids fire propagation, it only melts at 1,000°C and above: it is a fireproof product.
Chemically inert – It is a natural glass (aluminium, potassium and sodium silicate). It stabilises over time.
Light – Expanded perlite has a low density, between 50 and 125 Kg/m3, making it an excellent material for insulation and soundproofing.
Advanteges – If we consider the cost-volume-insulation capacity ratio, expanded perlite is the most economical insulating material around at present. It is nature’s best insulator.
Due to its closed, empty microcells, perlite eliminates any heat exchange through conduction and radiation. The perlite grains also immobilise any air present, thus avoiding the transmission of heat through convection.
USE OF EXPANDED PERLITE
Because of perlite’s outstanding insulating characteristics and light weight, it is widely used as a loose-fill insulation in masonry construction. In this application, free-flowing perlite loose-fill masonry insulation is poured into the cavities of concrete block where it completely fills all cores, crevices, mortar areas and ear holes. In addition to providing thermal insulation, perlite enhances fire ratings, reduces noise transmission and it is rot, vermin and termite resistant perlite is also ideal for insulating low temperature and cryogenic vessels.
When perlite is used as an aggregate in concrete, a lightweight, fire resistant, insulating concrete is produced that is ideal for roof decks and other applications. Perlite can also be used as an aggregate in Portland cement and gypsum plasters for exterior applications and for the fire protection of beams and columns.
Other construction applications include under-floor insulation, chimney linings, paint texturing, gypsum boards, ceiling tiles and roof insulation boards.
In metallurgy, perlite is used as a thermal insulator with a thermal surface, as well as a component for the manufacture of molds.
Cryogenics – Perlite is used as heat insulators for cryogenic plants. Operating mode – from 200 ° C to + 900 ° C.
Perlite is used as a filter in the pharmaceutical and food industries, as well as in ecology as a source of liquid pollutants.
Due to its damp and air retain features agroperlite is used in hothouse farms for artificial environment creation, for fruit and flower plants’ engraftment rootage and also their rapid growth.
AgroPerlite is an environmentally friendly material with a size of 0.63-5mm, a bulk density of 90-130 kg, a moisture content of not more than 5%, obtained from natural perlite rock of volcanic origin. Agroperlite is an environmentally friendly, free-flowing, porous, friable, light, durable material. Able to absorb liquids up to 400% of its own weight. Biologically resistant: not susceptible to decomposition and decay under the action of microorganisms, is not a favorable environment for insects and rodents. Chemically inert: neutral to alkalis and weak acids, sterile, non-toxic, does not contain heavy metals, pH – 7.0, neutral. Agroperlite has an excellent property to absorb up to 400% of water (by weight), to reliably hold it and give back this moisture to the roots of plants.
